Anthologies

I began the process of creative writing as a eager English student in middle primary school, determined to keep a journal of day-to-day events in an A4 scrapbook and writing fictitious short stories about evil monsters, cruel teachers and domineering parents: all while maintaining consistently high grades in standardised tests. Each day after school I would write a page and describe my feelings toward the people I saw and the frustration of being in trouble, all the while being encouraged by my teacher to continue working on my English despite dwindling scores in mathematics and spatial perception tasks.

It was not until high school that I rekindled with my writing instincts and began vigorously practicing the styles of dialogue and descriptive imagery found in horror stories and autobiographies. Again, I received a great amount of attention from teachers who quickly picked up on my ambition, but also sensed a great deal of self-doubt that hindered my self-expression and lead to another long period of dormancy.

As I grew older, I realised that there is value in collecting all my scattered poems and vignettes into one word-processed document, so that I would be able to reflect upon these milestones in development and share them with others just the same.

To document a particular moment of life, a particular set of ideas or even just categorise a myriad of emotional responses, the anthology is a cohesive form which enables the writer to collate their work into an easily readable portfolio. From here, many elements including typeface, spacing, graphic art and formatting are free for experimentation.

While only my personal anthologies are currently included for showcase, it is hoped in time that this category will evolve into a vast archive of anthologies of many writers’ most prized works. It is a vision to see the model anthology become the pinnacle of a writer’s joy and emblem of their journey as a writer.

The Fields of Hope // download
My third anthology following The Enlightenment of The Rose and The Seven Dales of Vale, presenting a large body of poems and short stories that portray key aspects of personal change and development with hope and perseverance, ruminations upon the loss of close friends and family and expressions of adapting to new forms of empowering thought.

Enlightenment of The Rose (2001)
Enlightenment of The Rose began as a dedication of poems and vignettes to describe the confusion, helplessness and isolation associated with depression in young people, and the difficulty in finding solace in time of need. However, what began as a project wholly consumed by negative outcomes slowly evolved into a well-rounded document of discovering strength and self-sufficiency in the abstraction of positive thought reinforcement.

The Seven Dales of Vale (1999)
My first anthology and earliest example of an unedited collected body of juvenilia, The Seven Dales of Vale aimed to provide the reader with a broad sensory experience of profound emotion, realism and involvement, while providing an array of digital artwork complementing the central themes of archaism, mystery and disillusionment.
